Free year of LinkedIn Premium!
Getting back into the Job market after separating from the military can be stressful. What do I want to do with the rest of my life? What do I want to do for the next year? College? Career? Just survive and get by? That was my mindset at least. I had no idea what I was going to do. I had just gotten a divorce, I had a 3-year-old daughter and I was living in my truck in the dead of winter. My daughter stayed with my ex-wife until I could find something that could provide me with a better life. This isn’t a sob story, it’s just the truth. This also isn’t a story about how LinkedIn or social media gave me the career of my dreams and saved the day, nope not even close.
I didn’t have social media and I didn’t know about LinkedIn. I was applying to every job I could find, via paper application. I didn’t think my military experience as an 0311 (Infantry Rifleman) could really translate into the civilian world, and I wasn’t totally wrong. See when it comes to our military experience we tend to look at what we did, and what we experienced and we don’t focus enough on the intangibles. Military Veterans tend to be task-oriented, and punctual (does anyone remember those 0400 weapons draws?). Employers, especially in this current market are less worried about the experience and more focused on someone who is coachable and will show up, take responsibility and one day lead a team.
